Y-Exchange is a monthly series of presentations about performing arts, technology and science and how they intersect and inform each other, in which selected artists and scientists are invited to talk about their life and work. This month Y-Exchange is proud to present Michael Leavell and Hien Huynh.

Y-Exchange is presented by Kinetech Arts, ODC Theatre and The Djerassi Resident Artists Program. This event is open to the public and admission is free.


Michael Leavell, Ph.D. is a scientist and a dancer. Michael is Vice President of Research and Development at a bay area synthetic-biology company, which focuses on engineering microbial cell factories that cost-effectively produce unsustainably-sourced products. He received his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from University of California, Berkeley in 2003 and his B.S. in Chemistry from University of Colorado at Denver in 1995. Michael has studied various styles of dance and is most passionate about Contemporary / Release, Contact improvisation, and Afro-Brazilian folkloric dance.

Hien Huynh finds joy through poetry, movement, and warm hearted connections. He was born in Da Nang, Vietnam and migrated to Oakland CA in 1993. Through embodied practices, Hien aspires to seek understanding and recognition of the vibrations of life, deepen awarenesses, and open heart for human compassion. Hien has most recently been nominated for an Isadora Duncan Award for outstanding achievement in performance by individual. He is honored to have performed in the works of Lenora Lee Dance, Kim Epifano, Robert Moses’ Kin, Kinetech Arts, PUSH, Deborah Slater Dance Theater, Christy Funsch & Nol Simonse, and punkkiCo.
